Windows 8 Consumer Preview on a Macbook Air

It was probably not the smartest thing to do to upgrade my Windows 7 BootCamp partition the second it came out.  It was probably also not the smartest thing to do this a couple of hours before leaving on a multi-week trip.

Two major issues faced immediately:

  • Touchpad not recognized.  The drivers don’t work and Touchpad++ doesn’t help either.  I’m guessing I’m about the only person in the world currently using a USB mouse on an MBA.  On the bright side, I don’t have to worry about the ridiculous over-sensitivity of the thing when in Windows 7.
  • Clear 4G device not recognized.  This is a bigger problem when there is no wireless available.

Good thing I have more than one MBA.  I’m actually posting this from Windows 8, but can always switch out to OSX, or use my older MBA if needed.

Hopefully, these issues will be cleared up at some point soon.

I did an upgrade, so I’ll probably try a fresh install from Parallels (the developer preview of Win 8 worked with it, so I’m assuming it still will) just to see if there is any difference.

Yes, I have it running now, everything works, except WIFI, which keeps going to a limited connection.

I have been trying to hack the Apple drivers for Windows 7 to get them installed, as they worked perfectly in the Dev Preview.

I also love Trackpad ++ for emulating some of the Multitouch features, but unfortunately although that worked in the Dev Preview, it doesn't work in the Consumer Preview, again I am working on hacking the driver to work.

Other than that, everything else works, even some basic Multitouch.

Still, quite painful not having functional WIFI, espically on a MBA with the minimal USB ports available, and no NIC.

Am looking into doing the same, updating an existing bootcamp partition to win 8 CP.
Are you running it on a MBA 2011 ?
Does audio work and are you running Skype by any chance?
