Visual Studio 2012 Update 3 RC2 Gotcha

As a general rule, I am no longer as ‘carefree’ as I was in my younger days, just installing updates willy nilly on my development machine and hoping for the best, but if an update as a ‘Go Live’ license and a clearly stated “we support upgrading from the RC to RTM” policy, I’m good to go.

So, I was concerned when I installed this and found that I could not load some projects due to a “You do not have rights to access the IIS metabase” error.  Ok, that could be a problem.

But, in this case, the solution was simple.  Even though the installer launches a UAC prompt, it apparently doesn’t run under full admin rights, or something, so when the update was done, and I clicked on ‘Launch’, there was some restriction.

Simply closing Visual Studio and reopening it using my taskbar “Run as Administrator” icon cleared that up.
