HP Elite X3 – Very Brief Review

I had ordered one from the Microsoft Store but when I saw that HP had them in stock, I cancelled the first order and made a second.  Apparently, I was one of the few to get one before they went out of stock, and got it right before a long weekend trip, and have had it for a week now. I like it, quite a bit.  It isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely something I can see using as my primary driver unless/until the mythical Surface Phone is ever released. The build reminds me of my old Lumia 1520,...

Initial Impression of the Microsoft Lumia 950

What the heck is up with the battery life?  I’m averaging 20% drain an hour. I didn’t get the XL because I’m saving my pennies after the Surface Book for the possibly mythical Surface Phone next year, and it seemed to have at least a good battery, but jimminy christmas, it ain’t good. Nice screen, though.

More thoughts on the upcoming Microsoft Surface Phone

Following up on this, a few more thoughts. My friend told me the Surface Phone would launch with the Surface Pro 4, and the Surface Book (which he didn’t tell me was a laptop, bastard), all of which he has seen personally. Clearly, he has no idea what he is talking about. But, given everything, there are reasons why Microsoft would release a phone that ran Windows (not Windows Mobile). It would not make sense if there was a vibrant Windows Mobile market.  But there isn’t.  98% of it is Lumia.  Lumia is nice but...

Windows 10 Mobile Build 10512 on a Lumia 1520: Still not right

I’ve been using Windows 10 ever since it first became available (so sometime in 2014), even on my main development machine, and without any significant issues along the way. Which makes it all the more surprising that Windows 10 Mobile is such a freakin’ trainwreck. Ever hopeful that the build quality will get better, not worse, I have installed the latest build on my Lumia 1520, and it still can’t display the start screen properly.  In the previous build, you could get it to show up.  It might disappear from time to time, but generally, you could get...

Windows 10 Phone 10136 on a Lumia 1520 slightly less of a train wreck than 10080

But Lordy, it ain’t good. Improving over the previous build, you can at least use it.  The start screen will appear and stay ‘appeared’, so it is functional. But there is a tremendous lack of functionality, or broken functionality, or semi-randomly working functionality. In no particular order: There is a lag of 1-2 seconds between when you tap on a tile and when it then ‘flips’ with a particularly useless animation that indicates the app is launching. If you are lucky, it will launch.  Sometimes, you need to tap, watch...

Windows Mobile 10080 – A hot mess

So, I rolled back to Windows 8.1 using the Nokia Recovery Tool, as the latest Windows Mobile build is actually worse than the previous one. It did add Office.  That was nice.  Kind of.  The continual inability of it to ‘acquire licenses’ while trying to update things like the MSN apps meant that the start screen was usually unavailable. But what really made it unusable to me was how the continued inaccuracies in touch on the Lumia 1520 meant that in OneNote, it couldn’t figure out how to place the cursor, often causing it to select...

Windows 10 Mobile 10080 - Blank Start Screen

So, it took me a while to figure this one out.... I installed the latest windows mobile release, everything was fine (well, the install was a bit messy but whatever), started installing apps and then....nothing would show on the start screen. You could show the notification settings, but no apps. I could hack around by launching Cortana and it would launch some apps that way, but not others. What is going on is that the store (not store beta, the original) is still downloading apps. If it stalls, the start screen will come back for a bit. Apparently,...

Quick Impressions of Windows 10 Phone 10051 on a Nokia Lumia 1520

Ok, so I didn’t really read the release notes much.  I was out of town at a funderal and just installed it.  Generally not the smartest way of doing things, but I am a trained professional. The immediate ‘show stopper’ is that Office isn’t included.  I tend to use OneNote a lot.  Oops.  Wunderlist appears to be a useful enough substitute for the few weeks I have to wait for whatever build puts that back in. It is most definitely a work in progress with varying degrees of fit and polish (or lack thereof).  The most immediate things...

A marker? Netflix updates Windows Phone App

It isn’t Windows 10, but it’s something. Netflix has finally updated their Windows Phone app so that it is more like, well, Netflix.  You can access multiple user profiles, auto ‘continue watching’ (which I actually generally find annoying), etc. Now, if only TuneIn radio didn’t suck so much.

Nokia Lumia 1520 Battery Life

I just noticed/recalled that I hadn’t charged my phone since yesterday. After 29 hours since last charge, it has 51% battery left. Admittedly, I’ve only made a call or two, surfed a couple of pages, and took 4 photos.  But still, damn.  My 1020 would be at –35% or something.

A Windows Phone App I really wish was better: TuneIn

I use this app everyday to listen to various things, both local and national radio (sports radio generally, and yes, there are good sports radio programs, but I digress).  I also need to restart the app close to a dozen times a day, due to streaming failures mainly.  Or if it loses a signal, it fails to get it back without having to tombstone it, etc. It’s not totally unusable, as I use it all the time, but only because I don’t know what to replace it with.
